In January of this year Lee Woods, a leading property compliance specialist, delivered a workshop at the NHMF Maintenance Conference advising registered providers on the approaches to statutory property compliance. The NHMF conference is devoted to housing maintenance and run by maintenance professionals. It covers strategic issues and provides a focus for networking and promoting best practice.

Using his specialist knowledge Lee discussed the ‘big five’ areas of - gas, asbestos, fire, electrical water hygiene - and stressed the importance of ensuring and, importantly evidencing, compliance with statutory health and safety regulations. Having completed numerous Compliance Health Checks for a diverse range of social housing providers, Lee was also able to share examples of best practice from the highest performing organisations.

Following this event Lee was asked by the National Housing Maintenance Forum (NHMF) to provide further comment and insight on statutory property compliance. In his article Lee covers the importance of effective board governance and leadership in ensuring statutory health and safety obligations are met. It includes advice for boards, common compliance pitfalls, and how to develop a compliance framework, which Lee recommends for effective compliance management.
