Passive fire protection is built into the structure of a building to provide stability, and into the walls and floors to separate the building into areas of manageable risk – compartments. These areas are designed to restrict the growth and spread of fire allowing occupants to escape and offering protection for firefighters. Such protection is either provided by the materials from which the building is constructed, or is added to the building to enhance its fire resistance.
 
NHS Property Services Ltd appointed Pennington Choices to carry out compartmentation surveys in order to: ascertain the level of risk enable repairs where required provide assurance to stakeholders Pennington Choices completed compartmentation surveys at more than 60 hospitals, over an 18 month period, across the UK.
 
Hospital sites included – RSH Hospital Crawley Hospital Edgware Community Hospital A number of the areas that needed to be surveyed were in use, and our project team had to work closely with the clients local teams to ensure our service did not disrupt the day to day running of the hospitals.
